Born in Vancouver in 1940, Stephen Gibbons-Barrett studied art in Nelson, San Miguel, Mexico and Calgary. His art is a unique and an individual experience for all those viewing it. Initially the viewer may experience an internal emotional response such as peace, eroticism, joy, anger or shock as they feel the artistic expression within the man being brought to life through his paintings and drawings. The imagery of each of his pieces tells a real story that is often very thought provoking and healing.Stephen creates personality within his painting so that a viewer can identify a new aspect of themselves as they look in to the piece. The desire is to create a form of art that inspires his clients to go deep within and explore another little part of themselves.

"The need to paint is a constant want. The finished work is the rest after a good meal. I find that the painting, while in progress, is forever changing. It always amazes me with new interpretations of how to get to the finished image. Sometimes this process will take many weeks, other times it falls out of my brush with no effort at all and is complete in just a few hours. The story that the image tells to the viewer is always an extension of what I have tried to tell them. With the painting I try to leave the image in a moving transition, this is probably why some critics have labeled me as a futurist. I've been very fortunate to have been able to paint for over 53 years and I have found that change is not only in the mediums and viewers it also happens in the artist's outlook on his work Like hunger to the body, my painting feeds my mind. It used to be the finished product that was the thrill I got from them, but now it is the act of painting that has become the real love of my art and not the end result."

My new studio in Mission is a peaceful and inviting area. It has been a constant battle to find space to create. Life keeps creeping in.
